Backpacking

I love my husband.
Let's get that straight - LOVE. I love him and his freckles and his huge smile and his hands.

But!
My husband, God love him, has a few hobbies that, for the life of me, I cannot get into. I am a sitting on the couch reading sort of girl. I am a buy-new-fabulous-shoes sort of woman. For God's sakes, I am a drink-a-glass-of-wine-while-watching-a-chick-flick sort of lady!

My lovely, lovely husband likes nothing more than to be outside. And not the normal kind of camping, mind you! My husband, Bless his soul, loves to go in the complete middle of nowhere where there is not a toilet to be found, prowl around like a wild animal, and he is happy.

We have walked miles through the Sonoran desert, over boulders (and I am very very afraid of heights....and 110 degree weather, thank you). We have found old missions and places where cars should not be going - but there we are, going there in a Jeep with a six inch lift.

My favorite and most ridiculous was backpacking up a mountain. I am a tall girl, but I have no upper body strength as you can only imagine, so this was very difficult for me (though he did, to his credit, take most of the heavy things). Once we got to where we were going, we set up a two person diamond-shaped tent, and made strange meals that wouldn't cook right because of the elevation.

I wasn't a happy camper (pardon the pun), but again - I LOVE my husband and I love spending time with him, so I go on these crazy trips all the time. While up on the mountain, it hailed for hours while we were stuck in our tent with our 60 pound dog. While up on the mountain, a mountain sheep tried to eat our clothes. While up on the mountain, I got sick and was throwing up for days (and well ... you know. Ugh).

My point is - I love my husband. He is the sweetest thing in the world. But I do not especially love backpacking. Or camping in the wild parts of the earth. Or eating dehydrated meals for days. But when he smiles, his eyes get a crinkle right in the corners and I love seeing that.

Mineral Makeup

On a day to day basis, I normally do not wear any foundation. So when I was faced with many makeup choices for my wedding day, I felt a little lost. Basically, I bought out the store and raced home to try quite a few of them to find out which ones didn't leave my face cakey or any of the other bad things that can happen with makeup.

After trying a few liquids and a few powders and a few everything-else's, I realized I love this new thing where most makeups that you can purchase at normal drug stores now are "mineral."

Now, keep in mind that on your wedding day, you want your face to be flawless. And not melt off. Or turn your face red. Or any other terrible thing. I was never a fan of powders in the past, as they seemed to give you a cakey residue all of your face. Ugh. But at the same time, we as women never had the greatest choices without spending thousands. We all want to look like Cindy Crawford, but God knows what she spends on makeup.

I'll cut to the chase: I tried Loreal, Revlon, etc etc. All the drug store brands. And THIS was my favorite: http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=8274364939514372313 . Cover Girl minerals! It almost seemed to disappear on my face, just blending in neatly so it looked like I had no redness or zits or anything!

I always had a red tone to my face (I am very Irish). I also had a conspicious pimple on the left side of my chin (gahhh, the terror of waking up with that on your wedding day!!).

Anyway, just wanted to make a suggestion to any of you ladies out there who want to look great and get a deal!

Border Collies

I never had many pets growing up, so when I got married and my husband had a dog, I jumped at the chance to find out more. When we were still just dating, Tyler (the border collie) used to like to "herd" my cat around the house. My cat's name was The Duchess Bernadette, and as you can only imagine, she was a very high strung and prissy thing.

Tyler loved to push her into corners, doing back and forth motions with his body, until she got so upset that she would swat him in the face with her claws. I no longer have a cat, but I have witnessed Tyler "herding" other dogs at the dog park where I take him.

Border collies are originally bred from Scotland to herd sheep. There is something inherent within them that, occasionally, makes them want to continue to do this. The most amazing thing to watch is the "border collie stare" in which a border collie begins by staring down whatever it wants to herd, almost hypnotizing it.

Another fun fact about Border Collies is that when they compete in dog shows, they are classified as "working dogs," so they are allowed to have chipped teeth, and have less points removed for appearance problems.

Border Collies are traditionally black and white, though there are variations. Tyler is black and white, with brown eyes (though many have blue eyes or one blue and one brown). From what I can gather, Border Collies love routine. If you want to set your dog on a daily routine, he will be much more happy for it. For example, give certain words for going to the bathroom when you put him outside to do so, and certain words for exercising and certain words for mealtimes. Tyler is jubilant to know exactly what time, it seems, that we head to the dog park every day and what time he gets fed.

Border Collies are one of the most intelligent dogs in the world and adapt quickly to their surroundings. They are known to be Frisbee champions, but Tyler does not seem to wish to participate in that. It all comes down to what your dog's personality is, as well. Border Collies are also very social dogs, so watch with great happiness as he or she easily welcomes a new dog into your home (and probably will try to herd he or she!)

Lastly, if you take a Border Collie into your home, make sure you have a lot of time on your hands to give he or she a lot of love. I have been told many stories of Border Collies who were not given a lot of attention and ended up chewing on rocks out of boredom (such as gravel you may have outside your house or in a backyard) and breaking all their teeth off. Border Collies definitely need a lot of mental stimulation.

I am grateful to the second love of my life, Tyler, for all that he gives us daily and if you choose to also get a Border Collie, I know you will be as happy as us!
